APCC EDHR leads support Stephen Lawrence Day

22/04/2019

To mark the first Stephen Lawrence Day, APCC Leads on Equality Diversity and Human Rights, David Munro, PCC for Surrey, and Hardyal Dhindsa, PCC for Derbyshire, said the following:

We are really happy to support the inaugural Stephen Lawrence Day.

In the years since Stephen Lawrence was senselessly murdered in a racist attack in 1993, we have seen campaigning from across our communities demanding justice and change, led by the extraordinary and tireless work of Stephen’s parents, Neville and Doreen Lawrence OBE (now the Baroness Lawrence of Clarendon).

Stephen Lawrence Day provides us with a fantastic opportunity to celebrate and remember Stephen’s life and legacy, and also focus on the steps we can take to help young people make positive choices, contribute to their communities and live their best life.

As policing leaders, we pledged in the Policing Vision 2025 to place the public at the heart of everything we do. In light of the recent increase in serious crime, engaging young people has never been more important, in order to enable them to lead lives free from crime and violence, and to build safer communities for all.
