Police & Crime Commissioners call for unity
Following the referendum on Europe, Police & Crime Commissioners across England and Wales have called for local communities to show tolerance, respect and unity towards each other.
The debate about Britain’s role in Europe will continue for many months, if not years and we, the Police & Crime Commissioners are urging communities not to allow the bigoted views of a small minority to affect the excellent inter-community relationships throughout our country. We have a proud tradition of standing up for what is right, regardless of race, sexuality or disability – as PCCs we will ensure that our police forces do everything within their powers to tackle those who think hate crime is acceptable.
We welcome the Prime Minister’s announcement yesterday of extra funding for security measures and for new guidance on the prosecution of perpetrators of hate crime – they will be used!
Anyone experiencing hate crime of any sort should call the police on 101 or 999 in an emergency. Police forces across England and Wales stand ready to offer support and guidance to victims and will do all they can to get the perpetrators before the courts.
