APCC EDHR Leads Make Statement Following Government Response to Lammy Review

19/12/2017

Today, the Ministry of Justice published the government’s response to the Lammy Review on the treatment of, and outcomes for, Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic individuals in the Criminal Justice System. Following this, David Munro, the APCC Lead on Equality, Diversity and Human Rights (EDHR) and PCC for Surrey, and Hardyal Dhindsa, the APCC Deputy Lead on EDHR and the PCC for Derbyshire, said:

“We welcome the Ministry of Justice (MoJ) response today to the Lammy Review.  The improvements it signals that will be made in data collection and analysis should help to improve the experience and engagement of people from BAME backgrounds with the criminal justice system.

“We are particularly heartened to read that the MoJ are exploring how to improve data collection with regard to religious identity, and also smaller minority groups, such as the Gypsy, Roma and Traveller communities. This will improve our understanding of the factors driving the disproportionalities that these groups face.

“Improved data collected by the Criminal Justice System will  better inform our understanding of the challenges faced by BAME groups, and in-turn help us to drive forward progress in policing, to ensure that everyone who comes into contact with the police is treated fairly and with respect.“
