We support any measures which toughen regulations on the importation and breeding of dogs

As the Government announced a consultation on measures to tackle puppy smuggling, Sussex PCC Katy Bourne said dog owners and the wider public would welcome the chance to have their say on proposed new powers.

She said: “The huge response to recent surveys about pet theft and exploitation shows that we are a nation of dog lovers who value the companionship and joy they can bring us.

The Association of Police and Crime Commissioners’ own dog theft survey earlier this year showed that people were now fearful of walking their dogs because the lockdown-driven demand had seen prices surge and made dognapping and puppy farming temptingly lucrative.

“I support any measures which will toughen regulations on the importation and breeding of dogs both for the sake of our beloved pets and to make the market a more difficult place for criminals and unscrupulous dealers.”
