Supporting PCCs to reduce road injuries and death, reduce criminality on our roads and drive initiatives that promote a safer system.

Prioritising road safety

More and more PCCs are setting road safety and roads policing as a key priority in their Police and Crime Plans. Since the inclusion of roads policing within the Strategic Policing Requirement (SPR) in 2022, PCCs are playing a crucial role in holding their force to account for how roads are policed. They are chairing, or seeking to chair, their county-wide road safety partnerships, and ensuring that the capabilities set out in the SPR are met through engagement with their chief constables.

The APCC is working with government and third sector partners to drive down road injuries, including activities such as supporting the call from the British Medical Association to lower the alcohol level for drink drive prosecutions, campaigns to stop drug driving and the ‘Think’ campaign. During 2023-24, we worked closely with the Department of Transport to drive a number of pilots with the aim of reducing road injuries and deaths and the overall levels of criminality on our roads. We secured funding from the Department of Transport for eight PCCs to deliver focused activity in their areas.
