Response to the Change.org petition on the South Yorkshire Police and Crime Commissioner

28/08/2014

Nick Alston, Chairman of the Association of Police and Crime Commissioners (APCC) and Police and Crime Commissioner for Essex, said:

“Child sexual abuse is a horrific crime and Police and Crime Commissioners work closely with Chief Constables to support their efforts to bring offenders to justice.

“The APCC has no powers to sack a Police and Crime Commissioner.

“Police and Crime Panels have the power to suspend a Police and Crime Commissioner only if they have been charged with an offence that carries a maximum term of imprisonment exceeding two years.

“As you would expect in a democracy, ultimately the public has the power to sack their Police and Crime Commissioner at the ballot box.”
