HMICFRS Expectations for Police Custody report published
HMICFRS has published their report on Expectations for Police Custody.
The report sets out the inspection criteria for assessing the treatment of and conditions for detainees in custody and includes recommendations put forward by PCCs.
In a statement from APCC Joint Lead for Custody, PCC Emily Spurrell, said, “We welcome the publication of this report and are pleased to see our recommendations included.
“Police and Crime Commissioners are committed to delivering effective oversight of police custody in their areas and have well established partnerships to achieve this.
“We welcome the inclusion of expectations relating to PCC scrutiny, use of force, vulnerable people and those at risk of harm following release of custody.
“In our consultation response, we also stressed the importance of Liaison and Diversion schemes. This is a key theme across PCC Police and Crime Plans and essential if we are to ensure people entering custody can access vital support to address the drivers of their behaviour and prevent them from getting repeatedly involved with the criminal justice system.
“We are also encouraged that there is an emphasis on forces responding to feedback provided by PCC-led Independent Custody Visiting scheme. This rightly captures the importance of the Independent Custody Volunteer role in helping forces to improve and in building public assurance.”
