RESPONSE to RUSI Report, ‘Big Data and Policing: An Assessment of Law Enforcement Requirements, Expectations and Priorities.’

Responding to the Royal United Services Institute (RUSI)’s publication, Chair of the APCC’s Business Enablers Sub-Board and Police and Crime Commissioner for Nottinghamshire, Paddy Tipping, said:

“The RUSI report highlights the need for national interoperability of ICT infrastructure across a standardised information platform. As the Chair of the APCC’s Business Enablers Sub-Board, I am committed to playing my part, and working alongside colleagues to ensure that the Service is equipped with the digital infrastructure it requires to meet key operational and financial challenges over the next decade.

“The Police Transformation Fund will invest £11 million this financial year in national ICT initiatives that are fundamental to achieving the productivity benefits outlined in the Policing Vision 2025.

“This includes establishing a new Security Operations Centre (SOC) to deliver a nationally coordinated monitoring, response and remediation capability in order to protect all UK police forces from cyber threats. In addition, there will be a platform to give police seamless user access to local, regional and national information, networks and applications, including cloud services.

“We are also working together to build a national, standardised technology platform to facilitate collaborative production of documents, and their storage and management, to remove barriers to operational efficiency and enable joint working and digital engagement with the public.”

Chair of the Police ICT Company and Police and Crime Commissioner for Sussex, Katy Bourne noted:

“The Police ICT Company has been established with the purpose of increasing interoperability and supporting forces to develop common ICT standards that will improve the police’s capability to respond to rapidly changing IT demands, and make the public safer.

“The Company acts as a bridge between the policing, technological and commercial worlds, helping the service buy ICT more effectively, manage it more efficiently, and exploit new capabilities more successfully.”
