Emily Spurrell, APCC Joint Lead for Mental Health & Custody and PCC for Merseyside, provides an update on her national portfolio.
"Quite often with people living with mental health issues end up in custody, which is completely the wrong place for them to be. I'm working very closely with my PCC colleagues and the Home Office to find out how we can divert these people away, how can we work with our local health partners to get them into the right place of safety, where they're getting the right treatment and the right support and not being criminalised.
"In Merseyside we have a Mental Health Triage Team and they work really closely with the mental health trusts to make sure that those who come into custody get the right support."
